Ethics is Not For Wimps

On September 16, 2011, in Philosophy, by akdia

I came across this story and this is a gem. In business, the businesses that will always last is a company that is honest and has ethical practices. However, ethics is not for wimps, it takes courage.

It’s Not Easy

Let’s be honest. Ethics is not for wimps.

It’s not easy being a good person.

It’s not easy to be honest when it might be costly, to play fair when others cheat, or to keep inconvenient promises.

It’s not easy to stand up for your beliefs and still respect differing viewpoints.

It’s not easy to control powerful impulses, to be accountable for our attitudes and actions, to tackle unpleasant tasks, or to sacrifice the now for later.

It’s not easy to bear criticism and learn from it without getting angry, to take advice, or to admit error.

It’s not easy to feel genuine remorse and apologize sincerely, or to accept apologies graciously and truly forgive.

It’s not easy to stop feeling like a victim, to resist cynicism, or to make the best of every situation.

It’s not easy to be consistently kind, to think of others first, to judge generously, or to give the benefit of the doubt.

It’s not easy to be grateful or to give without concern for reward or gratitude.

It’s not easy to fail and still keep trying, to learn from failure, to risk failing again, to start over, to lose with grace, or to be glad of another’s success.

It’s not easy to look at ourselves honestly and be accountable, to avoid excuses and rationalizations, or to resist temptations.

No, being a person of character isn’t easy. That’s why it’s such a lofty goal and an admirable achievement.

R & R is Good for Business

On August 31, 2011, in Philosophy, by akdia

Having some good R&R is good for business. No, I’m not talking about rest and relaxation, although this is very good and needed. I am referring to, “Research and Review.”

… what?

I will explain further. When you are marketing your company, one of the most important things you can do is research your competitors, target audience, market and products. After you have done this crucial research, then you want to do your review. Review all of your research and look for any similarities, common threads, shared sites, common mentions, etc.

There is a gold mine out there. You just need to do the research to learn about that gold mine and then create your campaign around your research.

When you do this, you will be able to not just market to your customers, but talk to your customers to meet their needs.

Have a great week and go do some R&R.

Crap Happens, What Do You Do?

On August 10, 2011, in Philosophy, by akdia

One of the hardest things to deal with in life is when a friend stabs you in the back, a good friend, so I thought.

I really have three choices:

  1. seek revenge
  2. move on with life
  3. fight, fight and fight

I guess there are possibly more choices but these are the main three.

SEEK REVENGE

The benefit of this is that it will cause the offender a lot of pain, frustration and anger, which I feel would be the same for me. Although there is some gratification that may come from this, in the long-run I think everyone will lose.

MOVE ON WITH LIFE

The benefit of this is I forget it. Of course there is going to be some frustration but when you move on with life, you’re not going to be allowing the situation to control you. You are taking control of your situation.

FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT

My mom always told me, “It takes two to fight.” That saying has been running in my mind a lot, especially with children; however, it is the same with business or personal relationships. You can fight and again cause pain, anger, frustration but what I firmly believe is that fighting will not be helpful in anyway.

I’m not saying roll over and play dead, but analyze is it really worth fighting. I don’t know your beliefs, whether it’s the Cosmos, Buddha, Hindu, Christian or Muslim but all of them say forget and move on, which brings me back to, MOVE ON WITH LIFE.

It is amazing how life and marketing can have a lot of similarities. There has been a lot of chatter about the Google Slaps and changes, along with other industry leaders canceling accounts, etc. You can fight, fight and fight but will you really get where you want to go by doing this or should you just evaluate what is going on and implement some changes in the future?

Implement some changes, learn from what you may have/may not have done wrong and move forward. A wise man once said, “Life is the greatest teaching tool ever.”

Move forward and take control of your situation.
